Subject: I ❤ Sex-Based Rights

To Whom It May Concern,

Sex matters in health care.

Sex matters biologically: Illnesses affect men and women differently. But sex bias means women have been largely excluded from medical research with negative consequences for women’s health and wellbeing.

Sex matters to fairness and access: Women’s complaints are more likely to be discounted. Women wait longer for diagnosis and treatment, and tend to be offered less pain relief than men. Sex bias leads directly to additional suffering for women.

Sex matters to employment equity: Sex bias leads to low pay and difficult working conditions for healthcare’s mostly female workforce.

So, why is the BC College of Nurses and Midwives taking a nurse to disciplinary hearing for stating that sex matters in health care? Why is the BC Nurses’ Union not standing up for her?

Sex is a protected ground in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms because women face disadvantage on the basis of sex.

Women’s equal treatment in healthcare requires that the BC College of Nurses and Midwives and BC Nurses' Union uphold the right to equality in health care on the basis of sex.

Respectfully,
